Description


The purpose of this position is to plan, organize, and coordinate activities/programs within the Athletics Division for the Parks and Recreation Department. Enforces all rules and regulations associated with the respective sports.  


Examples of Duties


  • Plans, manages, and coordinates activities/programs within the Athletics Division of the department.
  • Oversees and manages the youth and adult athletic programs within the division including but not limited to creating game/practice schedules, team registration, fee collection, distribution of team uniforms/equipment, recruitment of volunteers and coaches, and association oversight. 
  • Determines material, equipment, facility, supervision, or instruction needs for each activity or program and coordinates with other staff members.
  • Responds to public inquiries about athletic programs made by telephone, correspondence, or during public meetings.
  • Prepares for publication a variety of brochures, calendars, letters, posters, press releases, flyers, and related communications regarding athletic programs and distributes to schools, churches and throughout the community.
  • Coordinates, schedules, and maintains related records and statistics for athletic programs and personnel and keeps updated on the website.
  • Schedules games and officials/scorekeepers for a variety of sports and athletics that are developed through the Henry County Recreation Department.
  • Performs a variety of miscellaneous duties such as answering phones, typing correspondence, running errands, picking up supplies needed for activities, planning for rental and use of the Recreation Building by setting up tables and chairs for classes, etc. Acts as a liaison with the different county and city associations and the Recreation Department.
  • Promotes interest and provides information regarding recreation programs to community leaders, recreation officials, community service groups, other departments, and the general public.
  • Must be available for evening and weekend work as scheduled, year- round.
  • Must carry an “on call” cell phone during non-working and working hours.
  • Serves as a member of various employee committees, as assigned.
  • Involvement in Georgia Parks and Recreation Association representing Henry County in District 6, including athletic/program meetings and meeting requirements to have teams participate in GRPA tournaments.
  • Survey athletic interests and needs of youths and adults.
  • Schedules and runs various tournaments throughout the year for a variety of sports through the Henry County Recreation Department.   Contact all coaches, teams, and umpires when there is a game change or rainout.
  • Assists in other areas of Parks and Recreation, such as Special Events, Holiday events, Summer Programs or camps, as needed.
  • Supervises, directs, and evaluates assigned staff and volunteers; develops and oversees employee work schedules to ensure adequate coverage and control; compiles and reviews timesheets; approves/processes employee concerns and problems and counsels or disciplines as appropriate; assists with or completes employee performance appraisals; directs work; acts as a liaison between employees and volunteers; and trains staff and volunteers in operations, policies, and procedures.
  • Organizes, prioritizes, and assigns work; prioritizes and schedules work activities in order to meet objectives; ensures that subordinates have the proper resources needed to complete the assigned work; monitors status of work in progress and inspects completed work; consults with assigned staff to assist with complex/problem situations and provide technical expertise; provides progress and activity reports to management; and assists with the revision of procedure manuals as appropriate.
  • Generates and reviews a wide variety of reports related to daily operations and activities in order to audit work performed by subordinates; ensures accuracy of payroll deadlines; reviews, verifies, and approves daily functions that are complex in nature.
  • Operates a personal computer to enter, retrieve, review or modify data, utilizing word processing, spreadsheet, database, presentation, Internet, e-mail, or other software; and operates general office or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions.
  • Communicates with supervisor, other employees, County department heads, outside agencies and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.
  • Serves as a liaison for volunteer associations and the county.
  • Enforces all rules and regulations associated with the respective sports.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned. 


Minimum Qualifications


Education and Experience:

Requires a bachelor’s degree in a related field and two (2) years of related experience in youth athletics and recreation, or equivalent combination of education and experience.


Licenses or Certifications:

Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver’s license. Must be CPR and First Aid certified or have the ability to obtain within six (6) months of employment.


Special Requirements: 

Will be required at times to work nights and weekends and adjust schedule accordingly. May work some weekends and holidays as needed.


Knowledge, Skill, Abilities/ Supplemental Information


PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The work is light work which requires exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force to move objects. Requires mental acuity including the ability to make rational decisions through sound logic and deductive processes, the ability to express ideas by means of the spoken word and have close visual acuity. 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions and may require standing for extended periods of time. Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, temperature and noise extremes, or violence.
