JOB SUMMARY

 

This position is responsible for developing and overseeing recreational and athletic programs for youth and adults.


MAJOR DUTIES

 

Directs the coordination and scheduling of facilities and personnel for athletic programs; prepares facilities for activities, programs, and events.

Secures and trains coaches, officials, and part-time employees.

Supervises the work of part-time and seasonal staff.

Inspects Park facilities and grounds for needed maintenance and repair; maintains inventory of needed equipment and supplies.

Enforces safety rules, policies, and ordinances at park facilities.

Coordinates the scheduling of sports games and practices with the appropriate officials.

Assists in coordinating youth athletic drafts.

Maintains attendance records and prepares activity reports.

Provides information to the general public regarding facilities, park services, and park usage; coordinates events with community and school organizations.

Promotes programs and availability; prepares news releases for the local media.

Performs related duties.

 

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION

 

Knowledge of the principles and techniques of recreation administration.

Knowledge of the rules, equipment, and facilities requirements for a variety of sports and games.

Knowledge of relevant laws, department policies and procedures, and program objectives.

Knowledge of the rules of a variety of sports.

Knowledge of sports field and building maintenance techniques.

Knowledge of scheduling methods for various recreational activities.

Skill in maintaining accurate records.

Skill in planning and coordinating large groups to ensure the availability of facilities, supplies, and volunteers for athletic events.

Skill in the supervision of volunteers.

Skill in interpersonal relations.

Skill in oral and written communication.


SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

 

The Parks and Recreation Director assigns work in terms of very general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures and the nature and propriety of the final results.


GUIDELINES

 

Guidelines include Georgia Parks and Recreation Association guidelines, county ordinances, departmental and safety rules and regulations, and the rules and regulations of various sports.  These guidelines require judgment, selection, and interpretation in application.



COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK

 

The work consists of varied athletic program coordination duties. The need to coordinate a variety of programs contributes to the complexity of the position.

The purpose of this position is to oversee athletic recreation programs for youth and adults.  Successful performance helps ensure the provision of athletic programs for the community.

Contacts are typically with co-workers, parents, program participants, officials, coaches, volunteers, and the general public.

Contacts are typically to provide services, exchange information, resolve problems, and motivate personnel.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT

 

The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, or walking.  The employee must occasionally lift light and heavy objects and be able to distinguish between shades of color.

The work is typically performed in an office and outdoors, where the employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, irritating chemicals, machinery with moving parts, and occasional inclement weather.


SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY

 

The position has direct supervision over assigned personnel in the absence of the Parks & Recreation Director.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with the completion of a baccalaureate degree in a course of study related to the occupational field.

Sufficient experience to thoroughly understand the subordinate positions to be able to answer questions and resolve problems, usually associated with one to three years' experience or service.

Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
