Purpose of Job

Under limited supervision, supervisory and recreational work planning, organizing, administrating, budgeting and directing a variety of indoor/outdoor athletic events and team sports. Work involves coordinating and monitoring athletic programs that are fair for all involved, recreational in nature, fun, and safe. Position is responsible for overseeing (3) athletic supervisors and managing of athletics. Responsible for growing and improving existing Athletics programs and developing and launching new programs.

  • Bachelor degree required; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position.

Must possess a valid driver's license.


Essential Duties, Responsibilities:

The following duties are normal for this position.  They are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive.  Other duties may be required and assigned.



• Evaluate existing programs and services and modify programs as necessary.

• Initiates new services and programs designed to meet customer and stakeholder needs.

• Prepare reports and supporting documentation for board and/or committee meetings.

• Communicate with the Director of Parks and Recreation and the Assistant Director regularly

on athletic matters.

• Assist in maintaining fiscal control of Recreation Department budget in areas of Athletics

• Oversees the purchase of program supplies.

• Prepare information and presentation material to lead community meetings, coaches’ meetings, and

parent meetings

• Plan and prepare performance appraisals.

• Recruit and select in employment of assigned areas.

• Develop and coordinate new and existing programs. Directly supervise all athletic programs

• Demonstrate exceptional customer service skills in all communications.

• Work with the Marketing and Program Coordinator to effectively market all programs and facilities.

• Develop and evaluate programs on a seasonal basis.

• Participate in Special Events as assigned.

• Approve payroll for assigned staff

• Perform other duties as assigned by the Assistant Director and/or the Director of Parks

Recreation.

• Communicate with the parks department to prepare fields for all programs.

• Report all field maintenance issues to the Parks and Facilities Superintendent.

• Become trained on all field maintenance equipment.

• Performs the job in a safe manner and in compliance with the District policies, procedures, work and safety rules and the employee handbook.

  • Schedule part-time staff for practices and games.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities


  • Knowledge of the rules of a variety of youth and adult sports and department rules and regulations.
  • Knowledge of recreational based technology programs.
  • Knowledge of budget procedures.
  • Knowledge of first aid and CPR.
  • Skill in planning and coordinating large groups of people in order to insure the availability of facilities, supplies and volunteers for recreation events.
  • Skills in verbal communication and human relations.

    TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to use body members to work, move or carry objects or materials. This position requires: standing, sitting, crouching, walking, talking, hearing, and seeing. Must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally. 

  • INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION: Requires the ability to hear, speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information. Includes receiving assignments and/or directions from co-workers, assistants or supervisors. 


INTELLIGENCE: Requires the ability to learn and understand basic principles and techniques; to acquire and be able to expound on knowledge of topics related to primary occupation; and to make independent judgment in the absence of management. 

VERBAL APTITUDE: Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, and to follow oral and written instructions. Must be able to communicate effectively.

NUMERICAL APTITUDE: Must be able to do basic math.

 

TECHNOLOGY APTITUDE: Must be able to use a computer and basic computer applications. Proficient in recreation based applications is expected.


  • INTERPERSONAL TEMPERAMENT: Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under minimal stress when confronted with an emergency. 

    PHYSICAL COMMUNICATION: Requires the ability to talk and/or hear.
