Maintenance Worker - Natural Resources Division
JOB SUMMARY
This position is an individual contributor engaged in maintenance, construction, and repair of the County’s public parks and recreation facilities. Duties include routine and heavy manual tasks, and the safe operation of various tools and equipment in a mission to care for the County’s public parks and facilities.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Operates heavy equipment, safely, including road vehicles, mowers, tractors, loaders, excavators, trenchers, utility vehicles, pesticide sprayers and other equipment as necessary in landscape maintenance work.
- Utilizes a variety of light power tools including weed eater, blower, edger, and carpentry tools.
- Utilize various hand tools such as hand sprayer, pruners, rakes, shovels, a variety of trail cutting tools, and other equipment as necessary in landscape maintenance work.
- Performs routine maintenance on all such equipment.
- Performs routine park and grounds maintenance including, but not limited to, trail and greenspace maintenance, landscaping, pond maintenance, boat ramp maintenance, litter control, and custodial tasks.
- Mows, weed trims, and applies pesticide to common areas.
- Maintains playgrounds and surrounding areas of the parks, and assists in park renovation.
- Prunes trees and shrubs, plants trees, flowers and shrubs.
- Prepares and maintains trails, greenspaces, boat ramps, docks, ponds, and related facilities.
- Cleans restrooms and picks up litter around parks, and medians.
- Performs unskilled and semi-skilled special projects involving the maintenance, construction, and repair of park and recreational facilities.
- Applies pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers safely as needed.
- Performs manual labor including repeated lifting of heavy objects, stooping, bending, and twisting.
- Assists in other areas of the department as necessary.
- Performs other related job duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
High school diploma or equivalent.
No experience is required.
Previous experience is preferred.
Special Qualifications:
Possession of a valid Georgia Driver’s License (Class C) and a satisfactory Motor Vehicle Record (MVR).
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of hand tools and equipment such as lawn mowers, tractors, weed eaters, blowers, etc.
- Ability to add and subtract whole numbers.
- Ability to comprehend and follow oral instructions.
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out simple instructions and follow established safety rules and departmental policies and procedures.
- Ability to deal with situations that are standardized and routine in nature.
- Ability to communicate and interact with coworkers and immediate supervisor.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Physical:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel objects tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to sit, climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.
The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 75 pounds.
Vision:
- See in the normal visual range with or without correction.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
Hearing:
Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions and is regularly exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals and risk of electrical shock. The employee is moderately exposed to vibration. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
- Must be available for work on weekends, evenings, and holidays.
