
Outdoor Recreation Coordinator
Position Summary:
The Outdoor Recreation Coordinator is responsible for the development, planning, coordination, implementation, and evaluation of outdoor recreation programs and activities for the community. This position plays a vital role in promoting active lifestyles and community engagement through nature-based and adventure-focused programming. The coordinator will work closely with internal staff, community partners, volunteers, and the public to deliver high-quality recreational experiences.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Plan, organize, and implement a variety of outdoor recreational programs such as hiking, biking, kayaking, outdoor education, nature exploration, camping, archery, team-building, and environmental stewardship events.
- Coordinate seasonal programs, outdoor camps, special events, and outdoor wellness initiatives for all ages and abilities.
- Promote programs and events through flyers, social media, newsletters, and presentations in collaboration with the marketing team.
- Recruit, train, schedule, and supervise part-time staff, instructors, and volunteers.
- Maintain program registration, participation records, evaluations, and reports.
- Ensure all outdoor programming areas are safe, clean, and well-maintained.
- Develop and manage program budgets, purchase supplies and equipment, and track expenditures.
- Conduct site inspections and risk assessments for outdoor activity locations.
- Assist in the development of policies and procedures related to outdoor programming.
- Coordinate with park maintenance staff to prepare and maintain program areas.
- Serve as a liaison to local schools, nature centers, community groups, and outdoor organizations to promote partnerships.
- Respond to public inquiries and provide excellent customer service at all times.
- Monitor trends in outdoor recreation and recommend innovative programs.
- Ensure programs meet accessibility, diversity, and inclusion goals.
- Perform other duties as assigned by supervisors.
- May work nights, weekends, and holidays
- Work with other divisions within the recreation department
Qualifications:
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Recreation, Outdoor Education, Parks and Recreation Management, Environmental Science, related field, or years of experience.
- Two (2) or more years of experience in outdoor recreation program planning and implementation.
- CPR/First Aid certification required or must be obtained within 90 days of hire.
- Wilderness First Aid or similar certification preferred within the first year of employment.
- Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Strong knowledge of outdoor programming, outdoor safety, and risk management practices.
- Ability to lead group activities, facilitate outdoor education, and work with diverse populations.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office, recreation software systems (e.g., RecTrac), and social media platforms.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs., hike long distances, and work in varying weather conditions.
- Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and leadership skills.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
Working Conditions:
- Work is performed in both office and outdoor environments, often in inclement weather.
- Requires physical activity such as hiking, lifting equipment, and setting up program spaces.
- Must be comfortable working in remote park locations with limited facilities.
- Able to drive a county vehicle
