About Us

Suwannee Parks & Recreation is responsible for the oversight of the First Federal Bank Sportsplex, the Suwannee River Greenway, Charles Springs, Little River Springs, Royal Springs, the Billy Jernigan Pool Facility, the Suwannee County Fairgrounds, plus eleven additional park facilities and five boat ramps.  The department is currently developing plans to construct two new community centers, renovate two existing community centers, and construct new facilities at the fairgrounds complex.  Additionally, the department offers recreational programs and activities year-round for children and adults. 

 

Nature of Work

This is a fulltime position that reports to the Parks and Recreation Director.  The Parks and Recreation Manager is responsible for the planning, development, and maintenance of public parks, recreational facilities, and open spaces and works to ensure that these spaces are safe, accessible, and enjoyable for all members of the community.  This position is responsible for the writing and administration of grants; park improvement projects; budget development and oversight; recruitment, selection, and evaluation of staff; and other duties as assigned by the director.


Examples of Work Performed

Work performed includes, but is not limited to:

  • Grant writing, administration, and reporting
  • Project planning and management
  • Develop and monitor annual budget as assigned
  • Conduct park and playground inspections
  • Assisting with splash pad operations
  • Development and implementation of department policies and procedures
  • Oversight of department website and marketing
  • Recruitment and selection of employees, performance management, and employee relations
  • Attends public meetings and serves as liaison to community groups
  • Oversight of facility rentals program


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Candidates must have excellent verbal and written communication skills.  Candidates must be skilled in communicating and interacting with the public in a tactful manner.  The ideal candidate will have experience writing and administering grants.  Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, and recreational software programs.  Ability to prioritize time sensitive work and allocate working hours efficiently.  Ability to coordinate and monitor multiple projects simultaneously.  Ability to resolve conflicts.  Knowledge of recreational programming, aquatic facility operations, park and grounds maintenance, and customer service.  Knowledge of budgeting and sound financial decision making. 


Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college in Parks and Recreation or similar field and three to five years of related experience. 


Preferred Qualifications

Supervisory experience, experience with grant programs, advanced professional certifications such as CPRP, AFO, CPSI, CYSA are highly desirable. 


Consequence of Error

Probable errors may cause delays on projects or grants and/or result in losses in terms of funding, materials, equipment, or working time not justified by results obtained.


Autonomy

Works under the direction of the Parks and Recreation Director with infrequent supervision following established practices and policies in the performance of assigned duties.


Communication Requirements

Communicates and works with staff from outside agencies and other City, County, and School departments, community partners, and frequently with individuals in administrative or executive positions.  Requires good judgment and tact in presentation to obtain cooperation or approval of action to be taken.  Comfortable and skilled at public speaking.


Physical Demands

Position requires sitting, standing, and walking intermittently as well as for long periods of time.


Environmental Conditions

Usual office type working conditions as well as outside work.  Exposure to elements such as heat, cold, and rain. 


Equipment Used

General office equipment, computer, phone, copy machine, scanner, tablet, credit card processor, PA system, A/V equipment, etc.  Working knowledge of general grounds and park maintenance, playgrounds, splash pad and pool equipment is also desired.
