Job Description

The Therapeutic Recreation Program Coordinator supervises recreation and inclusion programs for individuals with special needs; assesses program suitability for specific participants with a variety of physical, cognitive, and social disabilities; coordinates and advises site staff on how to plan, organize, and facilitate therapeutic recreation programs in Aquatic Centers, Recreation Centers, Senior Centers, Parks, and various other locations. In addition, this position establishes and coordinates with community partners to levy resources to aid in creating a full spectrum of offerings and resources for those with therapeutic needs.

Essential Duties

• Coordinates, implements, evaluates, and advises on a full spectrum of therapeutic recreation programs, services, and partnerships that offer a balance in the physical, social, cognitive, and affective domains
• Provides treatment services and recreation activities to individuals using a variety of techniques including arts and crafts, animals, sports, games, aquatics, dance and movement, drama, music, and community outings
• Treats and helps maintain the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of patrons by seeking to reduce depression, stress, and anxiety; recovering basic motor functioning and reasoning abilities; and socializing effectively

• Evaluates therapeutic programming to identify and ensures individuals with special needs receive the necessary support and accommodations
• Explores and manages grant opportunities
• Establishes protocols for inclusion, 
• Coordinates with site staff to develop or edit EAP and risk management plans to include therapeutic recreation and its participants
• Coordinates, implements, evaluates, and advises on the maintenance, inventory, management, and use of therapeutic recreation equipment, supplies, and best practices
• Keeps abreast of industry certifications/trainings/designations, industry leaders, legislative updates, tracks legal precedents, and the latest best practices in therapeutic recreation
• Seeks and develops creative approaches to inclusive recreation upholding the Gwinnett Standard of Excellence

Public Speaking Duties

• Initiates and leads trainings with staff, volunteers and Community Partners
